Let’s Talk: What to Expect in Your Child’s Parent Review

Partnering for Progress

We know how important it is to feel connected to your child’s progress, and that’s why at Spark, we make sure you’re never left out of the loop. Whether your child is just beginning services or has been working with us for a while, you’ll notice a consistent focus on collaboration and open communication.

One of the most important ways we do this is through parent reviews, a special time set aside just for you during each session to connect with your child’s therapy team. These reviews typically take place during the last 15 minutes of your child’s session, giving you a front-row seat to their progress and an opportunity to learn how to support them at home.

What happens during a parent review?

Parent reviews are more than just a quick update at the end of each session. They’re a meaningful way for you to stay involved and actively participate in your child’s growth and progress. Here’s what you can typically expect:

  • A Warm Greeting – We always start by saying hello and sharing something that went really well during your child’s session. Celebrating small wins helps keep things encouraging and focused on growth.

  • A Thoughtful Summary – Your therapist will come prepared to talk about a few key learning targets that were addressed during the session. For example:
“Today we practiced following two-step directions during puzzles, pretend play, and outdoor time,” or
“We focused on labeling during art, farm toys, and shared book reading.”

  • Specific Examples of Progress – We will share how your child responded to each activity and what supports were used. For example: “Suzie was able to follow the first step of a two-step instruction independently each time, but needed gesture prompts during each opportunity to complete the second part,” or “Suzie labeled ‘cat’ accurately across all activities today.”

  • Parent Coaching or Demonstration –  Your child’s therapist may walk you through the strategies they used during the session. You might see a short demonstration, have a chance to join in, or receive simple tips to try at home.

  • Challenging Behavior  – If your child had difficulty with challenging behaviors, we’ll explain what happened and how we responded, always keeping the tone constructive and supportive.

  • Time for Questions  – We always set aside time for you to ask your child’s therapist questions or talk through new observations. Whether you’re unsure how to carry over strategies the team is using into your daily routine, or just curious about why a specific skill was targeted during the session, this is your opportunity to connect directly with the therapist and collaborate on what’s best for your child. If you have questions about making changes to your child’s program or therapy strategies, bring those directly to your BCBA, who is responsible for designing and adjusting their ABA program.

Why parent reviews matter

These reviews aren’t just updates, they’re an important part of building a strong partnership between your family and your child’s therapy team. When families feel comfortable, informed, and respected, everything changes:

  • You’ll feel more confident in your child’s care

  • You’ll trust the guidance we offer

  • You’ll know how to support your child at home

  • We’ll benefit from your insights and feedback, creating a truly collaborative approach

In short, when we work together, your child makes even more meaningful progress, and that’s what we’re all here for.

Ongoing Parent Training with your BCBA

In addition to daily check-ins, your child’s Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) will also schedule more formal parent training sessions. These meetings go deeper into your child’s treatment plan, provide space for big-picture questions, and offer support tailored specifically to your family’s needs. We’ll cover things like behavior strategies, home routines, generalization of skills, and long-term goals.

We also want to hear from you. Have new challenges come up at home? Do you have a specific concern or something you’d like to prioritize in therapy? We’ll talk about how your input can help guide future sessions and ensure your concerns or suggestions are heard.

Your insight is incredibly valuable, after all, no one knows your child better than you do. Let us know what’s working well or if something feels challenging at home. Maybe your child is showing new signs of independence during bedtime, or perhaps transitions have been more difficult lately. Sharing this kind of feedback helps us better tailor your child’s sessions and coordinate support across settings.

We want you to feel confident, informed, and supported every step of the way. No question is too small, and no concern is ever brushed aside, this is a team effort!

Let’s Keep the Conversation Going

At Spark, we believe parents are an essential part of the therapy team. Your observations, ideas, and involvement aren’t just welcome, they’re needed. So whether you’re popping in for a daily review or sitting down for a more formal meeting, know that your voice matters here.
