October Recap: Prompting and Reinforcement

Last week, Spark Learning welcomed families to our October Ignite Connections events at both Avery Ranch and Enfield. This was a time to strengthen the bond between children, their therapy teams, and fellow Spark families. Ignite Connections is our ongoing series of short, purposeful gatherings designed to spotlight meaningful connections. Each event offers practical tools and ideas that families can take home and use right away.

During these sessions, families joined their children for the last 15 minutes of the session. Therapists demonstrated the goals, skills, and strategies their children have been actively practicing. Parents had the opportunity to participate alongside their child, ask questions, and see firsthand how therapy strategies can be integrated into everyday routines.

The focus this month was prompting and reinforcement, two of the most effective tools that we use in ABA therapy at Spark. Prompts are supports, such as reminders, gestures, or demonstrations, that help children complete tasks successfully. Reinforcement, like praise, encouragement, or a small token, motivates children to try again in the future. Families learned how to combine these strategies to build confidence, motivation, and independence in daily life.

To make it easier to implement at home, families explored practical steps through our four key areas:

Stop and Think!

This is a time for reflection and observation. Families discussed their child’s current prompting procedure and reinforcement system. They considered how these strategies are being used in therapy and reflected on how they might look differently at home. This step helps parents identify opportunities to create consistency and better support their child’s learning.

Let’s Practice!

Here, families put ideas into action in a small, manageable way. They selected one activity to try, provided prompts if needed, and celebrated success with a reinforcer. By practicing in a low-pressure setting, parents saw firsthand how their child responds to prompts and reinforcement, building confidence in using these strategies effectively.

Time to Apply!

The focus shifts to everyday life. Families chose one daily activity—like brushing teeth, cleaning up toys, or getting dressed—and applied their child’s prompting procedure paired with reinforcement. This step encourages parents to integrate therapy strategies into routines, making learning seamless and natural in the home environment.

Talk and Review!

Reflection continues with discussion and sharing. Families thought about what worked well, what could be improved, and captured one example to bring back to the next session. This step fosters a collaborative environment where parents, children, and therapists learn from each other’s experiences and celebrate progress together.

It was a wonderful time of connection, learning, and celebration of progress. Families left with concrete strategies to make everyday moments part of their child’s learning journey. We’re already looking forward to our next Ignite Connections event!
