Supporting Language Development: Interdisciplinary Training Between SLPs and BCBA

At Spark, we believe that collaboration between professionals leads to better outcomes for children. Recently, our speech-language pathologists (SLPs), Kheren and Liza, led a training session for our Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) on a topic that connects both fields: language developmental milestones.

Why This Training Was Important

While BCBAs are highly trained in analyzing and modifying behavior, their coursework often focuses more on the functions of communication (such as requests, labels, or answering questions) than on how language typically develops over time.

As SLPs, we specialize in understanding how children learn to communicate—starting from cooing and babbling to forming complete sentences and using language in social situations. By sharing this perspective with our BCBA colleagues, we help them understand why certain communication behaviors may be present—or missing—in the children they work with.

What We Covered

During the training, we explored:

  • Developmental language milestones from infancy through early childhood
  • The difference between receptive and expressive language
  • How social interaction and play support language growth
  • Early red flags for speech and language delays
  • How BCBAs can use this knowledge to support naturalistic communication

The Power of Interdisciplinary Collaboration

The response from our BCBA team was overwhelmingly positive. They appreciated the chance to view language through a developmental lens and reported feeling better equipped to recognize language milestones and collaborate with SLPs when concerns arise.

This training is just one example of how interdisciplinary collaboration can enrich services. When SLPs and BCBAs work together, we can create more cohesive, developmentally appropriate, and meaningful programming for the children we serve.
